More from Disasters
RMS Titanic was the largest vessel in the world when she entered service in 1912. On her maiden voyage, the passenger liner set sail for New York from Southampton on 10 April with 2,224 people on board. Four days into the crossing, the Titanic struck an iceberg in the Atlantic and sank the following morning, resulting in the deaths of over 1,500 passengers and crew. More male passengers and male crew perished than women and children, as they had valiantly allowed them to board the insufficient lifeboats first.
